A couple of weekends ago, I had a really good day at Cardiff's new white water course. I would definitely recommend it to any improving white water paddlers. I'll certainly be going again in the summer!

Being of sound mind..... or something like that, I booked on the open canoe beginners course on the white water weekend.

Taking the plunge...

After the compulsory purchase of a thermal rash vest and the borrowing of a decent kag from Steph (thanks!), I was as ready as I was ever going to be.  With Nigel leading, Richard, Brian and I got in from a muddy (did I mention it had rained a lot?) Sennybridge field.

Brecon White Water weekend

3 Star White Water Group

Instructor Ralph
Victims Kevin, Brendan, Tim, Stuart, Nick, & Ed who was with us, to keep an eye on us all.

Me (Kevin) and Brendan got there early on the Friday so our white water weekend started early with a beer at the pub to kill some time.

Back at the bunkhouse more people started to arrive, so after some coffee and tea we then got down to the business at hand.. Theory sessions which were very informative and helpful.

Who Pulled the Plug?

It is clear to me that we lurch from seriously scary flooded rivers one week to nothing but a trickle.  Our planned white water weekend in North Wales was looking distinctly dry!  Ralph was in charge and he always brings with him a huge smile and a certain ‘je ne sais quoi' so rather than cancel we decided to go and enjoy!

Boats on the Beach

The group gathered at the Goat Inn on Friday evening. What a fantastic venue for a paddling trip...good accommodation and food together with a great bar!  Some of us perhaps drank a little too much over the weekend, but that is another story.

On the weekend of the 20th and 21st June I decided to have a go at slalom. Where better to try it than at the Langham Farm Slalom run by Frome CC? The course is on the flat with a bit of flow, a great introduction to slalom. We turned up, playboats on the roof not knowing what to expect.

The alarm went off a 6am. Not a pleasant thought on a dismal Sunday morning. A peek outside the curtains. Still dark. Drip, drip... on the window. Good job I put the boats on the roof yesterday. "9am, the car park in Dulverton, dressed and ready to paddle..." that's what John Jardine had said - oh yes, and "...you can come in the back of my boat." So, an hour to get up and two to get there - bother... that is indeed 6am. Needless to say, Thomas and George were very fast out of the sack. Amanda made sure we got off with a good hearty breakfast and against the odds we were off at seven. Tom and George dozed... but not an option for me.
