If you were looking for a romantic paddle then this probably wasn't the trip to do! Even though we had all seen the weather forecast and secretly hoped someone else would phone to cancel, a dedicated NACC contingent appeared at 9am at Kearne Bridge on the banks of the River Wye this Sunday morning!
Once we got going we all appreciated being out in our boats. The river was flowing quickly and we soon began to cover the miles. The 6 kayakers worked hard to keep up with the 5 canadians including Will's new boat on its maiden voyage!
Even in the rain the Wye didn't disappoint, it's a beautiful river and the first flush of green from swathes of catkins through the grey gloom reminded us that Spring is coming. A diving cormorant made Chris jump out of his skin as it surfaced near his boat and then proceeded to accompany us down the river. Snowdrops were abundant towards the end of our journey and the magical blue flash of a kingfisher finished the trip off perfectly for me. I wonder if he's the same one we see in the summer at Symond's Yat?
With the river flowing so quickly we managed to paddle the 8 miles in about 2 hours. The head winds ensured we all had a good work out and as always the company made it a great trip. It's not often you have the Wye to yourself, maybe the rain had its benefits! Big thanks to Richard whose van became an impromptu changing room.
As for romance - well I guess sharing a bowl of chips in a warm pub after a rewarding paddle with friends and loved ones is kind of special! |

If there's one thing you can be sure of as a paddler with NACC it is the loyal support of your club members. Over 20 members enjoyed a great weekend at the Pyranhafest on the Treweryn. Saturday started in style with memorable runs/swims down the top section for some whilst others got stuck into courses - ranging from confidence boosting and freestyle to boofing. Lunchtime entertainment was at the Cafe wave with a freestyle competition to watch. The winner was chosen as a result of the support they received from the crowd - so there was no way Josh could not win with NACC behind him!! A great team effort in cheering produced the desired result!

A couple of weekends ago, I had a really good day at Cardiff's new white water course. I would definitely recommend it to any improving white water paddlers. I'll certainly be going again in the summer!

Brecon White Water weekend
3 Star White Water Group
Instructor Ralph Victims Kevin, Brendan, Tim, Stuart, Nick, & Ed who was with us, to keep an eye on us all.
Me (Kevin) and Brendan got there early on the Friday so our white water weekend started early with a beer at the pub to kill some time.
Back at the bunkhouse more people started to arrive, so after some coffee and tea we then got down to the business at hand.. Theory sessions which were very informative and helpful.

Being of sound mind..... or something like that, I booked on the open canoe beginners course on the white water weekend.

After the compulsory purchase of a thermal rash vest and the borrowing of a decent kag from Steph (thanks!), I was as ready as I was ever going to be. With Nigel leading, Richard, Brian and I got in from a muddy (did I mention it had rained a lot?) Sennybridge field.

On the weekend of the 20th and 21st June I decided to have a go at slalom. Where better to try it than at the Langham Farm Slalom run by Frome CC? The course is on the flat with a bit of flow, a great introduction to slalom. We turned up, playboats on the roof not knowing what to expect.
