Training with Tom and Jacko PDF Print E-mail
Trip Reports - Freestyle Reports
Written by Joshua Wedgwood

Josh on the WaterOver the half term Jacko invited me to Hurley to have a 1 on 1 training session to help with my posture. Good posture is one of the most important skills a freestyle paddler can have as bad posture will reduce the ability to rotate and control the boat. Luckily Tom who has great posture was around to help. Jacko told me and Tom to copy each other for 10 minutes when walking. It was amazing to see how just a little change can have a big difference. We then got on the water to do the same thing. I always throw some ends after I get on... I should have remembered to put my deck on! A chunky 4 gates with a tricky eddy met us. My paddling improved greatly when I was copying Tom... cartwheels, splitwheels and loops were all much easier. Back at Jacko's house after some cheese on toast Jacko and I discussed how I learnt and the stages of learning a new skill. If I could identify what makes me learn a new skill then moves would take less time to learn.

Thanks to Tom and Jacko for a great session.

See you on the water

Trip Reports - Sea Kayaking Trips
Written by Wayne Gibbens

Sea kayak trip 8th May

Low water 13:15, conditions clear and bright, wind strong, sea state slight to moderate.

The first sea paddle of the year was organised by Ralph Childs, with paddlers John Jardine and Wayne Gibbens. Originally a weekend away but changed to one day.

The plan was to put in at Tresilian bay near Llantwit-Major in the Vale of Glamorgan (between Barry and Porthcawl) and paddle along the coast, pass the castle of St Donats, to a buoy off Nash Point. Then paddle along the exposed sand bar, out to another buoy and back.

Trip Reports - Whitewater Kayaking Trips

The alarm went off a 6am. Not a pleasant thought on a dismal Sunday morning. A peek outside the curtains. Still dark. Drip, drip... on the window. Good job I put the boats on the roof yesterday. "9am, the car park in Dulverton, dressed and ready to paddle..." that's what John Jardine had said - oh yes, and "...you can come in the back of my boat." So, an hour to get up and two to get there - bother... that is indeed 6am. Needless to say, Thomas and George were very fast out of the sack. Amanda made sure we got off with a good hearty breakfast and against the odds we were off at seven. Tom and George dozed... but not an option for me.

Two Bridges Paddle PDF Print E-mail
Trip Reports - Sea Kayaking Trips
Written by nigel

My first paddle with the club on the sea was a short trip across the Severn and back organised by Wayne. Meeting under the old bridge we raced to get the car shutle competed and launched before the tide turned. Before we knew it, we'd paddled across the river making the crossing just souh of the old bridge.

The tides in the Severn can be very powerful but by paddling across just before high tide, the worst of their power was avoided and we actually arrived much more quickly than we expected. So we paddled gently up river enjoying the views and improving weather until someone pointed out the pub was open.

Suddenly there was a rush of paddles as everyone raced for the beach at Beachley. The pub was very understanding about the collection of damp paddlers and soggy neoprene and we all enjoyed a refreshing pint. After lunch, we returned to the boats, and with the tide turned, paddled to Severn Beach under the new bridge.

The trip was a great introduction to sea kayaking ‐ relatively short, but with lots of interest. Thanks to Wayne and Ralph for organising and their invaluable guidance - I'm hooked.

Plan B - Because there was no water in Plan A PDF Print E-mail
Trip Reports - Whitewater Kayaking Trips

Happy Birthday Stuart

I really love the River Barle - it's always such a sociable trip. The steady grade 2 and beautiful scenery make this one of the most popular trips in the club's calendar. It was therefore rather worrying that we'd had no significant rain for weeks and it looked like I'd have to call the trip off and disappoint about 25 enthusiastic paddlers.

As Steve Rayner had signed up for the trip, I rang him in mild desperation. I'd already re-scheduled the trip from a Sunday to a Saturday to coincide with Stuart Williams' 50th Birthday and with so many looking forward to a paddle I was very relieved to hear that levels in the Usk were holding up, thanks to some rain earlier in the week.

Emma o the first drop

Because many had paddled the Talybont stretch of the Usk just two weeks earlier (Club training weekend) we decided to risk the Sennibridge run.
