Whilst some club members had gone off in search of dammed water, four intrepid kayakers took on the mighty Axe! OK so the water was not exactly rapid but there was a large gathering of craft ready for the 2009 Axe race. Briefing over, on to the water, and away we go. The race start is split into age groups and type of craft with the longer canoes and sea kayaks starting last.

The greatest danger, I was told, is running aground on some of the gravel banks. Whilst gallantly giving way to a juggernaut of an open Canadian which came thundering through I found myself on one such shallow spot. After several minutes of lost time I was back in open water. The river is fairly narrow and twists and turns a lot to begin with. It then opens out into a wider estuary. The setting is very beautiful; but no time to look today. I could see kayakers ahead. It was time to practice my efficient forward paddling techniques.
The Axe race is certainly no adrenalin rush; however if you fancy an hour's work out it is great fun even in a short boat. Under the last bridge and turn right for the slipway. The river had one final twist in its flow with a strong current pushing through the last arch of the bridge. One unfortunate competitor did manage to capsize at this point however, we were home and dry.
Next year celebrates the 30th year of the race. Let's see if we can field a few more entrants particularly from the younger members. It was a good fun day out.
