Sea Kayaking

Bristol is a great place to start sea kayaking - the Bristol Channel has one of the biggest tidal ranges in the world and that means fast tides. Last year the club members paddled around the upper estuary, to Flatholm for a training weekend and even spent a week paddling round the Isles of Scily.

For those who have been paddling on the sea with Wayne or myself will have experienced the usefulness of 'proper' sea kayaks. On this note I can inform you that we have just taken delivery of two new P&H Scorpio sea kayaks, one of which had its first showing last Saturday night at Biblins.

These craft are for hire by club members for use on sea trips or even for touring on the rivers.

 (note - change of date)

Following a successful weekend out in the Bristol Channel I am proposing to run another weekend this year. The weekend will start with a paddle from Weston-super-mare leaving about 1700 on the Friday out to Flatholm, which will be home for two nights. A paddle on the Saturday to cover training in sea kayaks. Some theory in the evening - I like it when I have a captive audience. Sunday will be a day's paddle with no landing until we finish. Everything will be done afloat. The cost for accommodation and food will be about £50. The club has 3 sea kayaks that are available for use.

At this stage all I wish is for names of anyone interested (over 18 only) by 15/3/09 and whether you need to borrow/hire a sea kayak. As numbers are limited to six it will be first come basis with priority to new faces to this course. If there are people who solely wish to paddle from the island for two days then there might be opportunity for this as well again names by same date.

If anyone has any questions then contact me

Paddling - Sea Kayaking

Why did I want to build a kayak? I was after a new woodwork project, and having recently started kayaking it seemed a good idea to build a kayak, it would be much more rewarding than bookshelves and such like.

I told myself to think about this first and not rush. After a week and a holiday in Norway with magnificent Fjords, my mind was made up, I had to start now!
