This year's AGM is taking place on Saturday 28th January at 7.30 (just after the pool session). Taking place at The Lawns Inn, BS37 5BG. For more info see the website.
When I originally planned this trip it was mild, however on the day it was minus 8 when we met down by the lockkeepers inn in Keynsham. As a result of a week of very cold weather it was no surprise to see that the Avon was frozen. A change of plan was needed, upstream was solid with no viable access to the river. When you pushed the paddle down to the ice it just didn't move. Downstream of the lock it was slightly thinner and we were able to find a spot to get in.
The two canoes, two sea kayaks and three kayaks set off downstream. it was an art to try and negotiate the icefloes, but in places the ice went the whole width of the river. If you have ever paddled through ice it is quite a disturbing sound that it makes as the boat breaks through.
It was a pleasant trip down enjoying the sunshine, albeit the water and air was very cold. it was not long before our clothing, boats and paddle shafts were all covered with ice. On arrival at Hanham lock there was a canal boat trying to break through to get to the lock. He moved forward in little spurts as pieces of ice a couple of inch's thick gave way. Eventually he gave up. So for us it was out with the brandy chocolates and coffee before the return trip.
Once back and changed it was into the Lockkeepers for a merry drink. Thanks to all the other 6 that came and joined me.
lots of people still struggle on how to tie boats onto cars so i came across this short video clip. I know it relates to sea kayaks but is exactly the same principal for all kayaks.
If there's one thing you can be sure of as a paddler with NACC it is the loyal support of your club members. Over 20 members enjoyed a great weekend at the Pyranhafest on the Treweryn. Saturday started in style with memorable runs/swims down the top section for some whilst others got stuck into courses - ranging from confidence boosting and freestyle to boofing. Lunchtime entertainment was at the Cafe wave with a freestyle competition to watch. The winner was chosen as a result of the support they received from the crowd - so there was no way Josh could not win with NACC behind him!! A great team effort in cheering produced the desired result!
A couple of weekends ago, I had a really good day at Cardiff's new white water course. I would definitely recommend it to any improving white water paddlers. I'll certainly be going again in the summer!
NACC Youth Freestyle paddlers have won the club the honour of being the first to be awarded the "Champion Club" trophy for the 2010 Youth Freestyle series
The series provides masses of encouragement to young paddlers, boosting their confidence and developing their skills on moving water. With encouraging participation in mind the trophy is awarded to the club whose paddlers, taken together, have amassed the highest number of series points across the series - and this year... that was us.
Congratulations to all our YFS paddlers for taking part in the series; to their parents for their support; and to the NACC coaches, particularly Nigel and Anna, who have encouraged and supported all of our participating paddlers.
First of all I'd like to thank Nigel as the outgoing chairman for all the work and dedication he has put in over the years.
Now Nigel can get on with his mission to convert all us kayakers to open boaters.
So on to more about me......
To start with I'd like to quote you one of my favourite sayings "I live with fear everyday but sometimes she lets me go kayaking"
On and off I've been kayaking since I was in the cubs, but over recent years I've found a passion for white water.
I know within the club we have lots of open boaters & sea kayakers and I look forward to having ago at both skills more this year, but no matter how much I try I will have to leave the tail squirts and cartwheels to the fun boat paddlers, most being our younger members, oh and Brendan !!!!!
So on a closing note feel free to approach me anytime to ask anything, and I will do my best help you out.
Once again from myself and I'm sure all members a big thanks to Nigel.
